Uta Thyra Hagen (12 June 1919 – 14 January 2004) was a German-American actress and theatre practitioner. She originated the role of Martha in the 1962 Broadway premiere of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? by Edward Albee , who called her "a profoundly truthful actress."

Uta Hagen. Actress: The Boys from Brazil. Noted stage actress who has also done limited work in TV and film. Born in Germany and raised in Madison, Wisconsin, she studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. Her Broadway debut was in "The Seagull" in 1938.

Born in Germany, Uta Hagen moved to Madison, Wisconsin, at the age of six. With the exception of several interruptions for study in Europe, Ms. Hagen received most of her schooling in Madison, her home until age sixteen.
Ms. Hagen is the author of Respect for Acting, Love for Cooking, Sources - A Memoir and A Challenge for the Actor. She has received honorary doctorates from Smith College, DePaul University and Wooster College.
