Biografia. Nato ad Allestree, un sobborgo di Derby, Bates si diplomò alla Royal Academy of Dramatic Art di Londra, dove studiò prima di arruolarsi nella Royal Air Force. Nel 1956 esordì in teatro nel West End come protagonista in Ricorda con rabbia di John Osborne, un ruolo che ne fece una star.
