Javad Nekounam (Persian: جواد نکونام; born 7 September 1980) is an Iranian football manager and former player who currently coaches Persian Gulf Pro League club Esteghlal. He holds the record for the most appearances for the Iranian national football team.

The 35-year-old central midfielder, who played for Qatari club Al Arabi last season, made the announcement on Friday via a short statement. “As a football player, retiring is the toughest decision you have to make and I don't make it lightly,” he said.
