The Potemkin nieces. Elena Aleksandrovna, the sister of Grigory Potemkin, was married to Vasily Andreyevich von Engelhardt. Their six daughters, being nieces of Potemkin, were imperial favorites and featured prominently in the court of Catherine II and the subsequent reign.
Countess Alexandra Branitskaya (née von Engelhardt, Russian: Александра Васильевна Браницкая, Polish: Aleksandra Branicka [Braɲit͡ska]; 1754 – 15 September 1838), also known as Sanecka and Countess Branicka, was a leading Russian courtier.
In 1781 already aged 51, Branicki contracted a strategic marriage with one of the leading members of the imperial court, Alexandra von Engelhardt, almost 25 years younger, the niece of Potemkin and, according to court gossips, his lover and even the illegitimate daughter of Catherine the Great.

Biography. Aleksandra Katarzyna was the wife of Franciszek Ksawery Branicki and the daughter of Wasyl von Engelhardt and Maria Potemkina. Henryk Mościcki claimed that she was the first-born, illegitimate daughter of the Grand Duchess, the future Empress Catherine, and Count Sergei Saltykov.
