Daniel Parke Custis (October 15, 1711 – July 8, 1757) was an American planter and politician who was the first husband of Martha Dandridge. After his death, his widow, Martha Dandridge Custis married George Washington, who later became the first president of the United States.

Martha Custis’s first child was a son, named Daniel Parke Custis, born on November 19, 1751, followed in April 1753 by a daughter, Frances Parke Custis.
Daniel Parke Custis was thirty eight years old when he fell in love with the seventeen year old Martha Dandridge and married her on May 15, 1750. During their seven years of marriage, Martha and Daniel Custis had four children.

Before Martha became the first lady, she was married to Daniel Parke Custis from 1750 to 1757. Daniel was very wealthy, owned multiple plantations and hundreds of enslaved people, and his family was well known in Virginia.
Daniel Parke Custis died suddenly in 1757. His death made 25-year-old Martha one of the wealthiest widows in Virginia. Because Daniel died without making a will, which would have stipulated who exactly would get which property of his, the common law of “dower share” applied to Martha.
