Charles Tufts (July 16, 1781 – December 24, 1876) was an American businessman and philanthropist. Biography. Tufts was born in Medford, Massachusetts, the son of Abigail and Daniel Tufts. [1] . He was a descendant of Peter Tufts, an early colonist who came to America from England circa 1637. He received a common-school education. [2] .

Tufts' main campus is located on Walnut Hill in Medford and Somerville, about 5 miles (8.0 km) from Boston on the site of the original farm of Charles Tufts, the university's namesake. This campus houses all undergraduates in Arts & Sciences and Engineering, the graduate programs at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and all of the graduate programs in Arts & Sciences and Engineering.

Earlier in the decade, Charles Tufts, who had accumulated significant wealth and land holdings from his family’s brick manufacturing business, had donated 20 acres of land to the Church to be used for establishing a college.
Over the years, Tufts College continued to thrive and grow in enrollment and academic offerings, becoming a University in 1955. It opened 161 years ago with 7 students; today’s enrollment is 10,837. Charles Tufts, a member of the First Universalist Church in Charlestown, donated the land on which the Universalist college, Tufts College, was founded in 1852. His donation of twenty acres was then valued at $20,000 and was located on one of the highest hills in the Boston area, called Walnut Hill (originally Walnut Tree Hill).
