Charles Tufts (July 16, 1781 – December 24, 1876) was an American businessman and philanthropist. Biography. Tufts was born in Medford, Massachusetts, the son of Abigail and Daniel Tufts. [1] . Tufts' main campus is located on Walnut Hill in Medford and Somerville, about 5 miles (8.0 km) from Boston on the site of the original farm of Charles Tufts, the university's namesake. This campus houses all undergraduates in Arts & Sciences and Engineering, the graduate programs at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and all of the graduate programs in Arts & Sciences and Engineering.
