Philippe de Monte (Mechelen, 1521 – Praga, 4 luglio 1603) è stato un compositore fiammingo. Prolifico madrigalista, si espresse con grande autorevolezza nelle messe e nei brani religiosi. È stato senza dubbio, e resta, uno dei grandi del suo tempo [1] .
Philippe de Monte (1521 – 4 July 1603), sometimes known as Philippus de Monte, was a Flemish composer of the late Renaissance active all over Europe. He was a member of the 3rd generation madrigalists [2] and wrote more madrigals than any other composer of the time. [3]
Philippe de Monte was one of the most active composers of the Netherlandish, or Flemish, school that dominated Renaissance music; he is especially known for his sacred music and for his madrigals. Like many Netherlandish composers at the time, Monte journeyed to Italy to pursue his career.

Il 10 maggio 1568 ottenne il posto di maestro di cappella alla corte imperiale austriaca, posto che tenne fino alla morte, risiedendo principalmente a Praga e a Vienna. Il De M. è uno degli ultimi e maggiori musicisti della scuola fiamminga; fu attivo, modesto, di carattere dolce e gioviale.
Prolifico madrigalista, autorevole compositore di messe e brani religiosi, Philippe de Monte è stato senza dubbio, e resta, uno dei grandi del suo tempo. Celebrato in vita alla stregua di Lasso e Palestrina, dopo la sua morte è lentamente caduto nell'oblio tanto che oggi ben pochi ricordano la sua grandezza.
