Regista cinematografico e sceneggiatore giapponese, nato a Tokyo il 20 agosto 1905 e morto ivi il 2 luglio 1969. Quasi coetaneo di Mizoguchi Kenji e Ozu Yasujirō, N. ha faticato più dei suoi colleghi ad affermarsi nel mondo del cinema giapponese prima e internazionale poi e solo con il tempo la sua opera ha conquistato l'attenzione che merita.
Come Gosho, Ozu e Toyoda, è un regista giapponese della vecchia generazione, specialista in film d' ambiente contemporaneo, maestro del cosidetto shomin-geki sulla vita quotidiana della gente comune (impiegati, salariati, piccolo-borghesi) studiata nell'ambiente familiare e nei suoi amori.
