Dopo un viaggio drammatico attraverso l'Atlantico, durante il quale è stata costretta a favori sessuali in cambio delle medicine per curare la sorella malata, la giovane immigrata polacca Ewa si ritrova per le strade di Manhattan, preda di Bruno, un uomo affascinante ma malvagio che la costringe a prostituirsi.
In 1921, yearning to start afresh, Polish sisters Ewa and Magda Cybulska board a boat bound for New York City seeking a brighter future. Instead, on arrival to Ellis Island, Magda is placed in quarantine after receiving a grim, unexpected medical diagnosis, and the two women are forced to separate.
