Cornered is a 1945 American mystery thriller film noir starring Dick Powell and directed by Edward Dmytryk. This is the second teaming of Powell and Dmytryk (after Murder, My Sweet). The screenplay was written by John Paxton with uncredited help from Ben Hecht.
The tendrils of fascism creep across the globe and through the back most recesses of man’s mind in “Cornered.”. The 1945 noir casts Dick Powell as an injured soldier who refuses the idea of a homecoming, instead setting himself about the task of traveling to Argentina to hunt down the Nazi who murdered his French wife.

Cornered is directed by Edward Dmytryk and adapted to screenplay by John Paxton from a story by John Wexley. It stars Dick Powell, Walter Slezak and Micheline Cheirel. Music is by Roy Webb and cinematography by Harry J. Wild. Story is set at the end of World War II and finds Powell as demobbed Canadian flier Laurence Gerard.

Cornered is an international globe-trotting film noir. It is also a leading light of the sub-genre of ‘investigative veteran’ thrillers, along with The Blue Dahlia and Dead Reckoning . All of these movies throw in some excessive violence, trademark as it is to the war, and this violence becomes an aspect of the law-making at play.
