Jackson Redan, a Confederate States Army veteran of the American Civil War, attempts to rebuild his life by moving to Arizona Territory. His politeness and courtly Southern gentleman demeanor cause the residents of Prescott to name him Sugarfoot.

Dandily dressed Jackson Redan (Randolph Scott) is a former cavalry soldier heading to Prescott, Arizona on a wagon train. Looking for opportunity he winds up falling foul of greedy, Jacob Stint (Raymond Massey), a man looking for easy opportunity.
In Prescott, Jackson's polished and amiable manner wins him a warm welcome from the community, which includes the owner of the Diana saloon and gambling establishment, J. C. Crane, and Mary, a boardinghouse owner who dubs him "Sugarfoot."
