Arriving in Arizona on a wagon train in 1866 former Confederate officer Jackson Redan partners with local businessman Don Miguel while their competitor Asa Goodhue is joined by opportunistic drifter Jacob Stint.

This film takes Scott's trademark Southern gentleman persona and exaggerates it to a ridiculous extent, to the point where he comes across as a naive babe in the woods. Throughout the film he is contrasted with the villainous Jacob Stint, played by Raymond Massey as a stereotypically sneering, lecherous scoundrel.
