Lieutenant Danny Roman is the top hostage negotiator in the Chicago Police Department's east precinct. When he can't talk a hostage-taker into surrendering, he offers himself as an additional hostage and lures the subject into a position where he can be taken down with the minimum use of force, rather than an all-out assault.
Samuel L. Jackson is renowned hostage negotiator "Roman" who is shocked to learn of the murder of his partner. A little further investigation reveals that he had been looking into a multi-million dollar pension fraud. Next thing he knows, "Roman" is being charged with his friend's killing and decides to turn the tables.
The film stars Bruce Willis, who co-produced the film, as the police chief who takes place as the negotiator when the family of a wealthy accountant is held hostage by three teenagers. The film earned negative reviews from critics and becoming a box-office bomb, grossing $77 million against its $75 million budget.
