L'artista spera così di guadagnare qualcosa con i vasi che realizza nel 1887. Gauguin pone fine a questa attività durante il suo ultimo soggiorno a Parigi con la creazione di un capolavoro, il suo pezzo meglio riuscito: Oviri. Si tratta di un'opera in gres, cotta nel forno di Chaplet nel dicembre 1894.
Oviri (Tahitian for savage or wild) is an 1894 ceramic sculpture by the French artist Paul Gauguin. In Tahitian mythology , Oviri was the goddess of mourning and is shown with long pale hair and wild eyes, smothering a wolf with her feet while clutching a cub in her arms.

A shortened form of Oviri-moe-aihere (the savage who sleeps in the wild forest), the Tahitian goddess of death and mourning, the name itself fascinated Gauguin: savage, brutal, bloodthirsty. He used it, like a nom de guerre, to refer to himself, as though taking on the goddess’s terrible aspects.

The Wolf at the Door (Danish: Oviri, French: Gauguin, le loup dans le soleil) is a 1986 Danish-French biographical drama film written and directed by Henning Carlsen. It is based on real life events of French artist Paul Gauguin, who was married to a Danish woman and lived in Copenhagen in the 1880s.
