Henry Walter Bates FRS FLS FGS (8 February 1825 in Leicester – 16 February 1892 in London) was an English naturalist and explorer who gave the first scientific account of mimicry in animals. He was most famous for his expedition to the rainforests of the Amazon with Alfred Russel Wallace, starting in 1848.

Naturalista ed esploratore inglese (Leicester 1825 - Londra 1892); esplorò, con A. R. Wallace, l'America del Sud (1848), dove rimase fino al 1859, studiandone la fauna; per primo, formulò chiaramente il concetto di mimetismo.

Naturalista ed esploratore inglese, nato a Leicester il 18 febbraio 1825, morto a Londra il 16 febbraio 1892. Esplorò, insieme con il Wallace (1848), l'America del Sud, dove rimase fino al 1859; poté così raccogliere e descrivere moltissime specie di animali, che sono ora conservate nel British Museum.
Henry Walter Bates, a trusted companion of Alfred Russel Wallace, travelled to Amazonia in 1848, where he became fascinated by close similarities in appearance between unrelated butterflies.
