Abbott Lawrence Lowell (December 13, 1856 – January 6, 1943) was an American educator and legal scholar. He was President of Harvard University from 1909 to 1933.

Abbott Lawrence Lowell was President of Harvard University from 1909 until 1933. During Lowell’s administration, Harvard’s enrollment nearly doubled and its endowment quintupled.
Abbott Lawrence Lowell (1856–1943), political scientist and president of Harvard University, was born into one of the great families of Boston society. The Lowells had been established in Massachusetts since 1639 and had contributed to American life a distinguished line of ministers, merchants, industrialists, philanthropists, jurists, and poets.
His maternal grandfather was Abbott Lawrence, a U. S. minister to England. Dr. Lowell was educated at the public school and at Harvard College, where he was graduated in 1877. He studied law at the Harvard Law School and in the office of Russell and Putnam, being admitted to the bar in 1880.
