illiam Lamb, the 2nd Viscount Melbourne and Queen Victoria's first Prime Minister, was born in 1779. His family was part of the aristocratic Whig society that reached a peak in the late 1700s. Its members reveled in non-stop politics, partying, gambling, and infidelity.
Only the eldest of these — Peniston — appears to have been fathered by her husband Peniston Lamb, the First Viscount Melbourne (originally in the Irish peerage). A complaisant husband, he allowed all six to be brought up in the family home and did not openly question their parentage.
