Dent was president of Mayfair Mills in Arcadia, South Carolina (1958-1972), and he was a trustee of both the South Carolina Textile Manufacturers Association and the American Textile Manufacturers Institute.
Eleven years after his transfer, Dent was elected president of Mayfair Mills. He was also a member of the Business Council and served as president on the American Textile Manufacturers Institute. In 1973, President Richard Nixon appointed Dent as secretary of Commerce.
