Il ducato fu creato prima (come Duca di Richmond e Somerset) per Henry FitzRoy, il figlio illegittimo di Enrico VIII (della dinastia Tudor) avuto da Elizabeth Blount. In seguito alla sua morte senza figli nel 1536si estinse.
XVII secolo
Ludovic Stuart, secondo duca di Lennox (1574–1624), che deteneva anche altri titoli fra i Pari di Scozia, fu creato Conte di Richmond nel 1613 e Duca di Richmond nel 1623 come membro della linea di Lennox (non diversamente dallo stesso re Giacomo) nella Casata degli Stuart. Questo titolo si estinse alla sua morte nel 1624, ma le onorificenze scozzesi devolsero al fratello Esmé, conte di March. La quarta creazione fu nell'agosto 1675, quando Carlo II concesse il titolo a Charles Lennox, suo figlio illegittimo avuto da Louise de Kérouaille, duchessa di Portsmouth. Charles Lennox fu ulteriormente creato Duca di Lennox un mese dopo. Il figlio di Charles anch'egli di nome Charles, successe al titolo francese di Duca d'Aubigny (di Aubigny-sur-Nère) alla morte di sua nonna nel 1734.
La sede della famiglia è Goodwood House nelle vicinanze di Chichester nel West Sussex. Charlotte Lennox, Duchess of Richmond (née Lady Charlotte Gordon; 20 September 1768 – 5 May 1842), was a British aristocrat and peeress best known as the hostess of the Duchess of Richmond's ball.
26 apr 2022 · She married General Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond, son of Lt.-Gen. Lord George Henry Lennox and Lady Louisa Kerr, on 9 September 1789. She died on 5 May 1842 at age 73 at London, England. Her married name became Lennox. As a result of her marriage, Lady Charlotte Gordon was styled as Duchess of Richmond on 29 December 1806."

The Duchess of Richmond's Ball was a ball hosted by Charlotte Lennox, Duchess of Richmond in Brussels on 15 June 1815, the night before the Battle of Quatre Bras. Charlotte's husband Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond , was in command of a reserve force in Brussels, which was protecting that city in case Napoleon Bonaparte invaded.
