Il primogenito di questi, Henry, fu giustiziato dai partigiani degli York nel 1464, ma il secondogenito Edmund continuò a chiamarsi duca di S. fino alla morte (1471). This is the only surviving portrait of Fitzroy, and was probably painted at the time of his marriage to a daughter of the Duke of Norfolk. It shows Fitzroy in a strikingly informal pose, wearing an open-necked shirt and an embroidered cap.
Henry Fitzroy was the favoured illegitimate son of Henry VIII. Instead of depicting Fitzroy as a confident, wealthy and quasiroyal youth, this intimate portrait shows him in a state of undress, wearing a nightcap and shirt. A part of the Beaufort connection to the Somerset duchy, the title of Duke of Richmond was important as the earldom of Richmond had been held by his grandfather King Henry VII and by his great-grandfather Edmund Tudor, 1st Earl of Richmond.
