General James Barry Munnik Hertzog KC (3 April 1866 – 21 November 1942), better known as Barry Hertzog or J. B. M. Hertzog, was a South African politician and soldier. He was a Boer general during the Second Boer War who served as the third prime minister of the Union of South Africa from 1924 to 1939.

Generale e statista sudafricano (Wel l ington 1866 - Pretoria 1942). Come generale ebbe parte importante nella guerra anglo-boera. Contrario all'Unione, costituita questa fu nondimeno ministro della Giustizia nel primo gabinetto (1910-12).
The pact defeated the South African Party in the June 1924 elections. Hertzog became the new Prime Minister and included two Ministers from the Labour Party in his cabinet. In 1926 Hertzog was an integral part of the Imperial Conference which resulted in the Balfour Declaration.
Capo del Partito nazionalista (dal 1924), durante la sua presidenza (1925-33) risolse il problema dell’indipendenza sudafricana nell’ambito dell’impero britannico alla conferenza imperiale del 1926. Nel 1933 diresse un gabinetto di coalizione con la collaborazione del generale J.C. Smuts.
