Edward Cornwallis (5 March [O.S. 22 February] 1713 – 14 January 1776) was a British career military officer and member of the aristocratic Cornwallis family, who reached the rank of Lieutenant General.

Born into a family with influential connections, Edward Cornwallis and his twin brother, Frederick, became royal pages at the age of 12. A captain in the 8th Foot by 1734, Cornwallis acted as a courier for the diplomatic service between 1738 and 1743 and became major of the 20th Foot in 1742.
Edward Cornwallis, as the incoming governor of what the British referred to as Nova Scotia, had no reason to be in doubt as to the significance of relations with the Mi’kmaq, Maliseet, or Passamaquoddy.
