Von 2001 bis 2004 gehörte Ursula von der Leyen dem Rat der Stadt Sehnde an und war hier auch Vorsitzende der CDU-Fraktion. Daneben war sie Mitglied der Regionsversammlung der Region Hannover und dort Vorsitzende des Ausschusses Gesundheit und Krankenhäuser.
