Joseph E. Johnston (born February 3, 1807, near Farmville, Virginia, U.S.—died March 21, 1891, Washington, D.C.) was a Confederate general who never suffered a direct defeat during the American Civil War (1861–65). His military effectiveness, though, was hindered by a long-standing feud with Jefferson Davis.

One of the most controversial generals of the Civil War, Joseph E. Johnston was born and raised in Virginia, the son of a soldier who had served under Lee's father in the Revolution. He entered West Point with Lee in 1825 in the class behind Davis', graduating 13th out of 46 in 1829.
