This paper analyses the life of Chikage Ōgi, a Japanese politician who was once a Takarazuka actress, in order to develop a deeper understanding of the ways in which gender-role expectations restrict women’s access to opportunities throughout their life course and the pragmatic ways that women strive to achieve their goals despite this.

Chikage Ôgi was born on 10 May 1933 in Kobe, Japan. She was an actress, known for Sanjûrokunin no jôkyaku (1957), Mikkokusha wa dare ka (1958) and Last Day of Samurai (1957). She was married to Tôjûrô Sakata. She died on 9 March 2023 in Japan.
