Alben William Barkley ( / ˈbɑːrkli /; November 24, 1877 – April 30, 1956) was an American lawyer and politician from Kentucky who served as the 35th vice president of the United States from 1949 to 1953 under President Harry S. Truman. In 1905, he was elected to local offices and in 1912 as a U.S. representative.

He was one of the chief architects of the New Deal in the 1930s and a major symbol of Democratic Party continuity as a member of Congress for almost 40 years.

Barkley began his career as a prosecuting attorney in McCracken County, Kentucky, and then as a county judge. He served as a judge until 1912, when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representative as a member of the Democratic Party. Barkley spent almost fifteen years there before being elected to the Senate in 1926.
