En désaccord avec Louis-Philippe au sujet de la politique orientale (affaire Méhémet Ali, pacha d'Égypte), il démissionne et passe dans l'opposition à Guizot. 1845-1862. Il fait paraître son Histoire du Consulat et de l'Empire. Février 1848. Chute du régime de Louis-Philippe.
