An Old Bolshevik, Kamenev was a leading figure in the early Soviet government, serving as the first head of state of the Russian SFSR as chairman of the All-Russian Congress of Soviets, and as a deputy premier of the Soviet Union from 1923 to 1926, among other roles.

Lev Kamenev was an Old Bolshevik and prominent member of the Communist Party and Soviet government during the decade after the October Revolution in Russia (1917). He became an opponent of Joseph Stalin and was executed during the Great Purge.

Si schierò da giovane coi socialdemocratici, fu perseguitato e deportato in Siberia. Dopo la rivoluzione, fu plenipotenziario a Brest-Litovsk, poi (1927) ambasciatore a Roma.
