Spencer iniziò la sua carriera televisiva nel 1963 con The Patty Duke Show. Nel 1981 vinse un Obie Award per la produzione off-Broadway di Still life, incentrata su un veterano del Vietnam. Recitò inoltre nel thriller legale Presunto innocente, dove interpretò il miglior amico di Harrison Ford.
John Spencer (born John Speshock Jr.; December 20, 1946 – December 16, 2005) was an American actor. He was best known for his role as Leo McGarry on the NBC political drama series The West Wing and for his role as attorney Tommy Mullaney in L.A. Law.
