Robert Southwell, SJ (c. 1561 – 21 February 1595), also Saint Robert Southwell, was an English Catholic priest of the Jesuit Order. He was also a poet, hymnodist, and clandestine missionary in Elizabethan England.
Southwell, entrato nel noviziato dei gesuiti a Roma nel 1578, fu poi ordinato presbitero nel 1584 e inviato come missionario in Inghilterra nel 1586 insieme a Henry Garnet, altro gesuita britannico morto martire, e celebre per essere stato accusato di aver partecipato alla “congiura delle polveri”.
Robert Southwell, a poet and prose writer of William Shakespeare and Ben Jonson‘s generation, spent his adolescence and early manhood in Italy. His brief literary career flourished during the years when he was an underground Jesuit priest in Protestant England.
