Josef Richard Frings (6 February 1887 – 17 December 1978), was a German Cardinal of the Catholic Church. He served as Archbishop of Cologne from 1942 to 1969. Considered a significant figure in Catholic resistance to Nazism, he was elevated to the cardinalate in 1946 by Pope Pius XII.

Josef Frings. Born in Neuß as the son of a factory owner, Josef Frings grew up in a large family. In 1910 he was ordained as a priest. He studied theology in Rome and Freiburg from 1913 to 1915 and gained his doctorate in 1916. In 1942 Josef Frings was appointed Archbishop of Cologne.
