Edgardo II d'Inghilterra, detto Ætheling (che in inglese antico indica una persona che avrebbe potuto sedersi sul trono) (Regno d'Ungheria, 1051 – Regno di Scozia, 1126), fu l'ultimo membro maschio della casa reale anglosassone di Cerdic, cioè l'ultimo discendente del Casato del Wessex.
Edgar The Aetheling was an Anglo-Saxon prince, who, at the age of about 15, was proposed as king of England after the death of Harold II in the Battle of Hastings (Oct. 14, 1066) but instead served the first two Norman kings, William I, Harold’s conqueror, and William II.

Edgar Ætheling or Edgar II (c. 1052 – 1125 or after) was the last male member of the royal house of Cerdic of Wessex. He was elected King of England by the Witan in 1066 but never crowned.
Figlio di Edoardo l'Esiliato, della famiglia reale dello Wessex (1050 circa - 1120 circa); nato in Ungheria, tornò in Inghilterra (1057) col padre, erede designato al trono da Edoardo il Confessore. Acclamato re alla morte di Aroldo (1066), si sottomise però a Guglielmo il Conquistatore.

28 mag 2024 · Edgar Atheling, the last surviving male member of the ancient Royal House of Wessex, was born in Hungary circa 1051. Edgar's father, 'Edward the Exile' was the eldest son of Edmund II known as 'Ironside', and grandson of Ethelred II 'the Redeless'.
Edgar appears not to have made a strongly favourable impression upon any of them: to the anonymous compilers of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle he was the rightful heir to the throne of England, but to both William and Orderic he was indolent.
