Pieter Zeeman was a Dutch physicist who discovered the Zeeman effect, the splitting of spectral lines by a magnetic field. He worked with Lorentz and Van der Waals, and taught at Leyden and Amsterdam universities.

ZEEMAN, Pieter Emilio Segré Fisico olandese, nato a Zonnemaire, in Zelanda, il 25 maggio 1865. Studiò matematica e fisica a Leida e vi conseguì la laurea nel 1893. Quell'anno stesso si recò a Strasburgo a perfezionarsi e nel 1894 fu nominato libero docente di fisica a Leida.
