A native of Montreal, with dual American and Canadian citizenship, Shapiro received his bachelor’s degree from McGill University in 1956.

Harold Tafler Shapiro served as president of both Princeton University and the University of Michigan. At Princeton, where he earned his PhD in economics, he led the most successful fundraising campaign in the university's history and increased the quality and diversity of the student body.
