John Maynard Smith FRS (6 January 1920 – 19 April 2004) was a British theoretical and mathematical evolutionary biologist and geneticist. Originally an aeronautical engineer during the Second World War, he took a second degree in genetics under the well-known biologist J. B. S. Haldane.

Among his numerous contributions, Maynard Smith pioneered the application of game theory to biology and made significant contributions towards understanding the evolution of sex.
Professor John Maynard Smith has made a groundbreaking contribution to the establishment of a unified understanding of fundamental issues in evolutionary biology, including the social behavior of organisms and the problems of sex and sex ratio, by proposing the idea of the Evolutionarily Stable Strategy (ESS).
