Since 1943 his work has been concerned largely with problems related to the determination of the structure of proteins. These studies resulted in the determination of the structure of insulin. Sanger was awarded the Corday-Morgan Medal and Prize of the Chemical Society in 1951.

He was awarded the prize in 1958 for his determination of the structure of the insulin molecule.
