Fu una delle prime donne laureate a Oxford; divenne una notissima autrice di romanzi polizieschi negli anni Venti, ed è tuttora considerata uno dei migliori scrittori in questo particolare genere letterario, cui dedicò anche un saggio famoso, l’Omnibus del delitto (The Omnibus of crime, 1929).
Laureata a Oxford nel 1915 – fu una delle prime donne in Gran Bretagna ad attingere questa meta – medievalista piuttosto nota, autrice di ponderosi saggi di teologia e volumi di versi sperimentali, sembrava destinata a una brillante carriera accademica, quando pubblicò nel 1933 il suo primo mistery, Whose Body?
