Richard Burton Matheson (February 20, 1926 – June 23, 2013) was an American author and screenwriter, primarily in the fantasy, horror, and science fiction genres. He is best known as the author of I Am Legend, a 1954 science fiction horror novel that has been adapted for the screen three times.

Richard Matheson (Allendale, New Jersey, 1926 – Los Angeles 2013), iniziò a scrivere racconti giovanissimo, e ottenne il primo successo nel 1954 con Io sono leggenda. Scrisse tanto per il cinema e la televisione (per esempio molte puntate di Ai confini della realtà), lavorando tra gli altri con Alfred Hitchcock e Steven Spielberg.
A lifelong reader of fantasy tales, he made his professional writing bow in 1950 when his short story "Born of Man and Woman"? appeared in "The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction"; Matheson turned out a number of highly regarded horror, fantasy and mystery stories throughout that decade.
25 giu 2013 · LOS ANGELES (AP) — Richard Matheson, the prolific sci-fi and fantasy writer whose “I Am Legend” and “The Shrinking Man” were transformed into films, has died. He was 87. A spokesman for the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films said Matheson died Sunday in Los Angeles. No other details were provided.
