Iniziò a lavorare nello stile realista della Ashcan School, ma l'esposizione ai pittori modernisti europei nell'Armory Show portò a uno stile modernista personale distintivo che influenzò lo sviluppo successivo della pop art .
Stuart Davis nasce a Filadelfia il 7 dicembre 1892. Lasciata la scuola superiore, nel 1910 frequenta la Scuola d’arte di Robert Henri a New York ed espone per la prima volta alla “Exhibition of Independent Artists”.
