Charles Thomson (November 29, 1729 – August 16, 1824) was an Irish-born patriot leader in Philadelphia during the American Revolution and the secretary of the Continental Congress (1774–1789) throughout its existence.
Nato il 5 marzo 1830 a Bonsyde (Linlithgow, Inghilterra) e ivi morto il 10 marzo 1882. Studiò medicina a Edimburgo, ma subito si volse alle scienze naturali; dapprima (1850) fu professore di botanica all'università di Aberdeen, poi nel 1853 professore di scienze namrali al Queens College di Cork, successivamente e fino al 1868 a Belfast.
Biologo (Bonsyde, Linlithgow, 1830 - ivi 1882), professore nell'università di Edimburgo (1870-79); autore di notevolissime ricerche nel campo della biologia marina, di cui fu uno dei fondatori.
Charles Wyville Thomson, nome completo Wyville Thomas Charles Thomson, è stato un naturalista ed esploratore scozzese, celebre per essere stato lo scienziato alla guida della Spedizione Challenger.

4 nov 2017 · Charles Thomson’s attestation of the Declaration of Independence, in the Dunlap broadside and subsequent printings, was an affirmation of both the text and the act of declaring independence. But the Declaration was far from the only Congressional resolution to bear Thomson’s name.
After several years of classical training, Charles Thomson was the first tutor hired by the Academy of Philadelphia (the forerunner of the University of Pennsylvania). He served as a Latin School tutor from 1750 until 1755, living for part of that time as a boarder in the home of English master David James Dove .
