Leon Bakst was a painter, illustrator, and stage and costume designer for the Ballet Russes. He changed his name from Rosenberg to Bakst to avoid anti-Semitism and was exiled from Russia by Tsar Nichols II.

His designs for the Ballets Russes, especially during its heyday (1909–14), were opulent, innovative, and extraordinary, and his influence on fashion and interior design was widespread.
DAL VOCABOLARIO. LEMMI CORRELATI. Pseudonimo del pittore e scenografo russo Lev Samojlovič Rosenberg (Grodno 1866 - Parigi 1924). Collaboratore della rivista Mir Iskusstva ("Il mondo dell'arte"), ebbe i suoi primi successi lavorando per i teatri imperiali di Pietroburgo. Nel 1909 lasciò la Russia per Parigi, unendosi ai balletti di Djagilev.
