22 set 2016 · Of the women painters who were part of the movement, probably the most prolific and significant was Marie Spartali Stillman (1844–1927). She was born Marie Euphrosyne Spartali in Hornsey, Middlesex, to the west of London.
Spartali Stillman developed a distinctive pictorial style of poetic scenes drawn from late-medieval texts by Dante, Boccaccio and Petrarch. Notable for colour harmony and evocative atmosphere, her works were eloquently praised by Henry James .
