Nome adottato dall'esploratore inglese John Rowlands (Denbigh, Galles, 1840 - Londra 1904). Rimasto orfano a sette anni, fu accolto in un ospizio e fuggì quindi negli Stati Uniti, dove fu adottato da un mediatore di cui prese il nome.
