He is best-remembered for having written the first Bildungsroman ( Geschichte des Agathon ), [1] as well as the epic Oberon , which formed the basis for Carl Maria von Weber 's opera of the same name .

Wieland was the son of a Pietist parson, and his early writings from the 1750s were.
Vita. Figlio d'un pastore protestante, studiò diritto nell'univ. di Tubinga, prima di trasferirsi a Zurigo (1752) su invito di J. J. Bodmer. Tornò in Svevia, a Biberach, nel 1760, essendo stato nominato senatore e direttore della cancelleria della piccola libera repubblica.
