The College of William & Mary in Virginia (abbreviated as W&M), is a public research university in Williamsburg, Virginia. The College of William and Mary is the second oldest college in the United States, second only to Harvard College. In fact, the original plans for a college in Virginia date back to 1618 at Henrico, decades before Harvard was established, although these plans were abandoned because of the Powhatan Uprising.
The chancellor of the College of William & Mary is the ceremonial head of the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, United States, chosen by the university's Board of Visitors. The office was created by the college's Royal Charter, which stipulated that the chancellor would serve a seven-year term.
