Orenburg (Russian: Оренбу́рг, pronounced [ɐrʲɪnˈburk]), formerly known as Chkalov (1938–1957), is the administrative center of Orenburg Oblast, Russia. It lies on the two continents: Europe and Asia, on the banks of the Ural River and is 1,478 kilometers (918 mi) southeast of Moscow .

Orenburg, city and administrative center of Orenburg oblast (region), western Russia, on the Ural River at the Sakmara confluence. Founded as a fortress in 1735 at the Ural-Or confluence, where Orsk now stands, it was moved to its present site in 1743.
