Bissell died on March 5, 1996 (aged 86) at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California. He had suffered from Parkinson's disease . He was interred in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.

After a stint on the Broadway stage, Bissell began a career as one of the most recognizable character actors in the history of film and television. In I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957) and I Was a Teenage Frankenstein (1957) , Bissell played scientists killed by their own creations.
