The term "Beacon Hill" is used locally as a metonym to refer to the state government or the legislature itself, much like Washington, D.C.'s Capitol Hill does at the federal level.

The building is situated on 6.7 acres (2.7 ha) of land on top of Beacon Hill in Boston, opposite the Boston Common on Beacon Street. It was built on land once owned by John Hancock, Massachusetts's first elected governor.

Beacon Hill is home to the Massachusetts State House and many historical landmarks, including the Boston African American National Historic Site. One of the oldest communities in the City gets its name from the beacon that once stood high on the hill to warn locals about invasions. It’s no surprise that Beacon Hill is a protected historic district.
