I Bolt Thrower sono stati un gruppo musicale inglese death metal formatosi a Coventry (Regno Unito) nel 1986. Presero il nome dalla macchina d'assedio greca, romana e poi medievale balista, che in inglese si chiama ballista o bolt thrower.
Bolt Thrower was a British death metal band from Coventry. They formed in 1986 and released their first album with Vinyl Solution in 1988. The band then shifted to a new record label, Earache Records, soon becoming one of the best selling bands on that label. Their last label was Metal Blade Records.

BOLT THROWER were formed at a punk gig in a Coventry pub in 1986, following a conversation between friends guitarist Barry Thomson and bassist Gavin Ward. Inspired at that time by bands such as Sacrilege, Discharge, Candlemass & Slayer, they decided to form a band that was heavy, aggressive, but more importantly, original.
